The pantograph is a mechanical linkage originally developed for the precise copying and scaling of line drawings. Although simplified versions exist for recreational use, the pantograph remains an essential component in various professional applications, including lighting support systems.
With a typical scaling ratio range from 1:1 to 50:1 (reduction), pantographs provide controlled, stable vertical movement. In photography and video production environments, ceiling-mounted pantographs are commonly used to support studio lighting fixtures, allowing accurate height adjustment while minimizing floor clutter.
This manual outlines the installation procedure for a ceiling rail system pantograph intended for professional photographic lighting applications.
Installation Procedure
Install the Fixed Rail HoldersSecure the fixed rail holders to the ceiling using appropriate screws. Position the holders evenly along the length of the fixed rail, according to the total rail length and ceiling structure.
Mount the Fixed Rails and Double CarriageOnce both fixed rails are securely installed, attach the double carriage onto the fixed rails.
Install End Stops on Fixed Rails (Upper Position)Secure an end stop to each end of the fixed rails to prevent the carriage from moving beyond the rail limits.
Attach the Moving RailMount the moving rail to the lower section of the double carriage and ensure it is properly aligned and securely fastened.
Install End Stops on Moving RailsAttach end stops to the upper holes at both ends of the moving rail to limit travel in both directions.
Attach the PantographSecure the pantograph to the moving rail according to the manufacturer’s mounting specifications.
Install Cable RunnersAttach cable runners along the side of the rail where the wiring system will be routed.
Plan the number of cable runners based on approximately one runner per 60 cm of cable length.
If necessary, temporarily remove the end stop from the fixed rail to allow installation of the cable runners, then reinstall it afterward.
Install End Stops on Fixed Rails (Lower Position)Attach end stops to the lower holes at both ends of the fixed rails to fully secure the system.
Install and Adjust Pantograph SpringsInstall the pantograph spring(s) and adjust the tension according to the weight of the lighting fixture to ensure smooth vertical movement.
Route and Connect CablesRun the electrical cable from the lighting fixture, through the cable runners and end stops, and connect it to the power socket as required.
